"My experience of being in Prince of Wales Hospital for the first time"

About: Prince of Wales Hospital / DB3N - Cardiology Ward

(as the patient),

From the very first day that I was admitted into the emergency section of the Prince of Wales Hospital, the staff were extremely professional, very helpful and very caring.

Within the first half an hour, after taking all the information, I was being monitored, attended to and cared for on a regular basis.

Shortly thereafter I was transferred and admitted to the cardiology ward Dickson 3 North for a further 6 days observation and treatment. From the very first night in that ward, the nurses were so attentive, caring and very helpful, coming to check on me and everyone else I believe, on a regular basis, performing necessary tests, attending to requests, all with a positive attitude and a smile. Dealing with extremely difficult patients and bad behaviour I believe, especially on the late-night shift where the nurses rarely had time to eat or have a break.

On the following day, I went to have an ultrasound, where the doctor took their time to explain everything to me, to make me feel comfortable, thereafter explained the outcome etc.

The following day I was taken to do the angiogram test, where the young nurse staff were very proficient, knowledgeable and explanatory about the coming procedure. Shortly after, I had the procedure. The staff that attended to me were very caring, helpful and very professional in taking care of me. I quickly realised that the nurses took care of all the patients in exactly the same way.

The following day, I had the MRI, where the person by the name of Simon was also very professional, patient and explained what the test was all about to make me feel at ease.

I believe during all the tests a nurse accompanied me to and from the specialist theatre rooms for support and guidance.

All these procedures were in 3 days - I would say in record times.

Whilst in the ward, I found the nursing staff, male and female, were not only performing their role as nurses admirably, but were also psychologists, entertainers, and generally supportive, lovely human beings, that cared for, praised, understood and encourages the patients.

Their duties far surpassed expectations. I feel every day they go over and above their call of duty, doesn’t matter what the circumstance or what the situation was.

I’ve come to realise that most people do not understand how much work and effort is involved in the care and the nurturing of the sick and the patients with mental and physical disability, on the 24-hour basis. In my opinion, people do not realise this until they experience it firsthand.

I am deeply impressed and most grateful for their dedication and level of care.

My very special thanks and appreciation to

-Doctor Simon, a highly professional and caring expert medical doctor

-Heidi, nurse unit manager, who was caring, a delight to talk to, professional, helpful and very efficient

-Edmond: one of the nurses who was funny and worked tirelessly, always with a smile, spreading joy and care.

In saying that all the nursing staff male and female worked so hard taking care of patients around the clock I believe, without a complaint.

My gratitude and appreciation to them all!

Thank you.
