"Waiting time to see an Orthopaedic Specialist"

About: Royal Perth Hospital / Goderich Street Outpatients Clinic

(as the patient),

I have been referred to see an Orthopaedic specialist by my doctor as I have a torn medial meniscus and sprained ACL. My referral has been accepted by Royal Perth via text a month ago.

I decided to call Royal Perth recently for an update, speaking to the Orthopaedic section, I was told that I will have an appointment next year sometime.

In a way, I understand that this is a wait time but to me, I believe this a bit long. My doctor asked what I do for work, I am on my feet 8-12 hours a day, they said surgery may be necessary.

Regards.

Dear skyxq45,

I am sorry to hear of your circumstances and the wait time required for an Orthopaedic specialist consultation. Without specific details I am unable to comment about your situation, however, I can confirm that all referrals are triaged by senior clinicians. Once accepted, each referral is categorised according to clinical need and appointments scheduled for patients as soon as possible. Although we aim to see patients in a timely fashion, there is a large demand for Orthopaedic services which can result in longer waiting times.

For further clarification of waiting time for an appointment, please contact the Royal Perth Hospital Outpatient Manager via the hospital switchboard on 9224 2244. In the meantime, if you are concerned about your condition please see your GP.

The RPBG is committed to providing the Safest Surgery in Australia and is embarking upon a program of surgical transformation to ensure that more patients are treated in a timely manner, as part of our vision to provide world-class surgical services.

Best wishes,

Dr Lesley Bennett

Hi Doctor Bennett,

Thank you for your reply, as you suggested I will call and speak to the outpatient manager Friday.

I have been back to my local GP asking the question about the wait time, who informed me there is a wait for orthopaedic appointments, they said I would have to wait.

I will let you know the response from the outpatients manager when I call.

Again, thank for your response.
