"Doctor not listening"

About: Armadale Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

We visited the AKMH ED  with our teenager who has a bleeding disorder and had injured their hand.

We were told by the doctor who saw our teenager there was no bleed and they were going to put a plaster cast on my teenager's "possibly" fractured thumb.

When I asked for it to be left slightly open so I could check for swelling and bruising due to the bleed I was asked if I wanted this or not and told if I didn't, to go to a chemist.

In my opinion, a doctor should never ever ever doubt a teenager with a medical condition, one which they have had for life. If they say they have an internal bleed - they have an internal bleed!

In my opinion, this doctor was disgusting in their bedside manner.

Dear avocetfn53,

Thank you for taking the time to share the details your teenager's recent presentation to the Emergency Department at Armadale Hospital and the care and communication they received. I would like to sincerely apologise for your experience on this occasion; having a child unwell or injured is a traumatic time for any parent and I am deeply saddened to hear that your interactions with our staff added to any distress.

I appreciate that you also made direct contact with us in relation to your concerns, and I would like to thank you for providing us with the opportunity to thoroughly investigate.

I understand that you have been able to discuss your concerns with our Head of Emergency Department via telephone this week and an outcome has been reached.

Once again, I appreciate you taking the time to tell us about this issue which will help us maintain our focus on communication and the importance of listening to patients and their families.

I hope that your teenager is getting better each day and we send you strength and best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Kind regards,

Di Barr
