About: Armadale CAMHS

(as a parent/guardian),

Firstly appointments were changed to over the phone, but as COVID restrictions were eased, I was told that I could no longer see anyone in Armadale for my child and would have to travel all the way to Perth Children's Hospital to be able to continue accessing CAMHS Armadale services. This now means my child is expected to miss a whole day of school every week, which I feel is unacceptable.

Dear limabc88,

I am sorry for the difficulty you and your child are experiencing in accessing appointments with Armadale CAMHS especially when you are trying to support your child through a difficult situation.

I too believe that school is important to young people both as a place of learning and as an important social setting for them to learn. I can understand your concerns around your child missing school to attend appointments, and acknowledge the extra travel to Perth Children’s Hospital places a significant burden on your family.

I totally agree that the Armadale CAMHS team need to get back to the Armadale area as soon as possible so that services and support are easily accessed by your child and family as well as other families who find themselves in a similar situation. I would like to assure that the Armadale CAMHS team feel the same way you do about this unsatisfactory situation.

It is disturbing to read you feel ‘abandoned’ and ‘neglected’ and I would like to be able to support you in finding a solution to this difficult situation. We do offer appointment via Telehealth if travel is a barrier but I acknowledge this option is not for everyone.

If you are comfortable contacting me via phone or email, perhaps we can have a conversation about options for appointments. Please contact me at camhs.correspondence@health.wa.gov.au or via phone on (08) 6389 5800.

Please be reassured that work is underway to secure a new home for Armadale CAMHS in the heart of the Armadale area, and I look forward to having some good news to share with you soon.

I thank you for advocating for your child and other children and young people in the area who rely on CAMHS services.

Kind regards,

Dr Vineet Padmanabhan

Dear limabc88,

Thank you for your patience in waiting to hear about a new location for the Armadale Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) team.

I am happy to confirm that a suitable property on Fourth Road in Armadale has now been located and it is anticipated that Armadale CAMHS will move into the new facility in mid-May 2021. This is to allow for the facility to be fitted out and fit for purpose. The facility is centrally located and is opposite the Armadale Shopping Centre, 100 metres from a bus stop and next door to Headspace Armadale.

I would like to take the time to thank you again for providing your feedback on our service as it allows us to continually strive for improvement for our families.

Please accept my best wishes for your child and your family.

Kind regards,

Katie McKenzie
