"Care of my parent"

About: Bentley Hospital / Ward 5

(as a relative),

My parent was admitted to Bentley rehab with a fractured back, they also have Dementia and Dysphagia. Both are serious illnesses and they have a lot of trouble understanding things, as well as great difficulty swallowing.

Twice, I entered my parent's room to visit and both times I found my parent distressed and had a nurse standing over them, in my opinion, bullying them to swallow a tablet and drink, drink, drink, was what this nurse was saying in a loud voice. I believe my parent was so upset and I wasn't happy and said I don't want that nurse back in my parent's room, as I felt their behaviour was disgusting and in my opinion, so bullying! It seemed my parent felt very frightened to be left there so I made sure I was there every day.

The things I witnessed on Ward 5 was not good in my opinion. Several times my parent wasn't showered, despite bringing up our concerns at a family meeting, still not showered unless we jumped up and down. I felt for those patients who didn't have family, in my opinion, what I witnessed was terrible.

Based on our experience, I believe the Nurse Unit Coordinator are not capable of doing the job, I felt they weren't or really didn't care at our family meeting. In my opinion, things need looking into, we ended up taking my parent home.

Dear cubeky64,

Thank you for taking the time to share your parent's experience with Bentley Health Service (BHS).

I am truly sorry to hear that you found the behaviour of staff toward your parent to be of a bullying nature and that this behaviour caused them to be frightened and upset. This does not meet the standard of care we expect to deliver. I was disappointed to read that your parent wasn’t showered several times despite your concerns being raised in a family meeting.

RPBG would welcome the opportunity to discuss your concerns with you personally and I would encourage you to contact our Consumer Engagement Unit on (08) 9224 1637, 8 am to 4 pm or email RPBG.feedback@health.wa.gov.au.

Again please accept my sincere apology for any distress your parent's experience caused.

Kind regards,

Joel Gurr
