"Stay in ward 6B"

About: St George Hospital / 6B Respiratory

(as the patient),

I would like to voice my concerns over the lack of care during my stay so far.

I'm in 6b infectious disease ward. Admitted here a few days ago.

Advised of symptoms being excruciating bloody diarrhoea, can't hold down any food. I'm also very sensitive to dairy of any kind and high acidic juices.

Every meal so far was loaded with dairy, regularly receiving milk products, whole milk, juices.

I've raised 5 times that I can't eat any of this food and was told this would be corrected.

Now my dinner arrived and again, juice and high dairy loaded meal.

Raised with a junior nurse who seems one to finally care as they checked my file and said there was no mention of me raising this previously. Also, they were concerned as I believe the doctor is supposed to advise on the food I eat due to ongoing health issues and risk of aggregating my condition.

Appears now after 2 full days on hardly any food to eat it will be reviewed the next day and a dietician sent up.

Day 1 here I asked for my fluids to be refilled as my IV bag was out and had been for an hour and I got increasingly weak and dizzy due to loss of fluids from frequent bowel movements.

Took 2 more hours and asking 3 nurses until it got finally changed over.

I would think nearly 20 different people have come and gone since the night I was admitted, asking the same questions over and over. Making the same assumptions over and over and I keep repeatedly telling them that I've already answered all this and it should be on my file. But seems in my opinion, nothing gets recorded here. I feel it is a waste of taxpayer money and hospital resources if you ask me.

Why don't the nurses just record things so the next person has some records to go by? They come in empty-handed, no pen or paper and I believe by the time they return to station they would forget what they were told anyway.

I feel utterly disappointed. This stay is not coming out of my private health insurance. That's for sure.

Dear whisperjp64,

Thank you for taking the time to write of your recent experience at St George Hospital. I was very disappointed to read of the difficulties you encountered during your stay with us. We endeavour to provide a high level of service and I apologise that this was not what you experienced.

I thank you for reaching out to our Patient Experience Manager about your concerns.

I understand it must have been very frustrating to feel as though you were not being heard and having to repeat yourself frequently. I understand that a variety of medical specialties were involved in your care and treatment and it is, at times, important for each team to ask for information directly from you. I am sorry that our communication was not optimal and assure you that your feedback will be used as an opportunity for learning. I will ensure that your feedback is passed on to the medical and nursing staff that were caring for you.

I apologise that you were not provided with an appropriate diet during your stay with us. It is well recognised that eating and drinking well whilst in hospital is important for all patients’ health and recovery. I will make sure that your concerns are provided to the Manager of HealthShare Food Services.

I again thank you for your feedback as I provides us with an insight into areas that we can make improvements to our service.

Yours sincerely,

Paul Darcy
