"Horrible treatment, no empathy"

About: Kilcoy Hospital

(as a relative),

I am a healthcare worker. This is about my grandparent who was admitted to Kilcoy for rehab post knee surgery. My grandparent is completely blind. During their stay, I believe nurses left my grandparent sitting in the same chair all day and never took them for a walk, meaning their mobility deteriorated as they are unable to go for a walk themselves.

At mealtimes, my grandparent's meal was placed in front of them and I believe no one took the time to tell them a) it was there, b) what was on the plate. We never expected people to sit there and feed my grandparent but a very quick explanation of what was there would have helped.

As my grandparent was unable to find the food in front of them, they began to lose weight very quickly. They then entered a state of depression, which I believe is due to the lack of empathy and patient-centred care at this hospital.

My grandparent's spouse eventually took them home and organised at home rehab which has begun to help, however, they still have not recovered the mobility they lost as an inpatient

As someone that grew up in the area, I have never been so upset and appalled by the treatment my grandparent received by Kilcoy Hospital. In my opinion, nursing staff need to be trained to consider patient-centred care a little more. I feel it isn't rocket science to work out a blind man may need help with dinner and walking.

Dear kindnesspandemic,

Firstly, I wish to thank you for providing this feedback to us. Without carers like yourself taking the time to share these experiences with us, we would not know of a potential gap in our care provision of the sort you have relayed.

I am very sorry to hear your account of your grandparent’s treatment whilst a patient in Kilcoy Hospital’s Rehabilitation Unit. What you have described does not align with our values of putting people first.

I am the Service Line Director for Caboolture Hospital, Kilcoy Hospital and Woodford Correction Service. I have read your story and am very keen to conduct a thorough investigation into your grandparent’s care so I can discuss the findings with the staff concerned. However, I understand from private communications that you prefer for yourself and your grandparent to remain anonymous.

We very much respect your decision and whilst a more detailed investigation cannot be conducted, please be reassured that your feedback has been heard and is being addressed as best we can without knowing specific details. I reviewed your story and have discussed your account of your grandparent’s experience with the Nurse Unit Manager at Kilcoy Hospital with regards to the potential training of staff.

Should you change your mind and wish to speak to us privately about your feedback please contact our Consumer Liaison Office via phone on 5433 8888 or email to CAB_CLO@health.qld.gov.au.

Again, I thank you for sharing your feedback as it has provided us with the opportunity to look at our processes and practices more closely. I hope the home rehabilitation is helping your grandparent to recover their mobility.

Kind regards,

Dr Keogh
Service Line Director
