I am a healthcare worker. This is about my grandparent who was admitted to Kilcoy for rehab post knee surgery. My grandparent is completely blind. During their stay, I believe nurses left my grandparent sitting in the same chair all day and never took them for a walk, meaning their mobility deteriorated as they are unable to go for a walk themselves.
At mealtimes, my grandparent's meal was placed in front of them and I believe no one took the time to tell them a) it was there, b) what was on the plate. We never expected people to sit there and feed my grandparent but a very quick explanation of what was there would have helped.
As my grandparent was unable to find the food in front of them, they began to lose weight very quickly. They then entered a state of depression, which I believe is due to the lack of empathy and patient-centred care at this hospital.
My grandparent's spouse eventually took them home and organised at home rehab which has begun to help, however, they still have not recovered the mobility they lost as an inpatient
As someone that grew up in the area, I have never been so upset and appalled by the treatment my grandparent received by Kilcoy Hospital. In my opinion, nursing staff need to be trained to consider patient-centred care a little more. I feel it isn't rocket science to work out a blind man may need help with dinner and walking.
"Horrible treatment, no empathy"
