"MRI scan for my baby"

About: Monash Children's Hospital

(as a parent/guardian),

I have recently been referred by my paed in the county to Monash Clayton for further blood test for my infant child. I have recently got the blood test done and I had an okay experience with my baby. Discussing the next step which is an MRI with a staff member at Monash wasn’t a very good experience. I found I had been called by someone in the department who organises the MRI and been told a date that it was made to be but yet heard nothing from my Telehealth app from the neurologist prior to them requesting an MRI.

When I question several staff about this MRI about further information why it needed to be done and what or how my child was going to benefit from this scan, I was told it was procedure and no other reason could be discussed. I explained to the staff member that I would like to wait for the blood test result to see if anything came back from them but I was told I was delaying the process and if I didn’t get the MRI the neurologist wasn’t going to see me and my child for a follow-up app to get results.

I started to get angry and tried to explain to the staff member that I wasn’t delaying my options I just don’t want to get the MRI for my child if I don’t know the reason, risk, benefit or no information about getting it.

I would like to have been treated better and explained a bit more information about the MRI instead of feeling forced into it. I had my child at Monash Clayton and didn’t have a good experience at all there from my weekly scans to getting booked in to get induced.

I felt like I was just another number there with staff being too busy to sometimes attend to your buzzer. If I could discuss this further with someone I would much appreciate the follow-up.

Thanks.
