I attended the PathWest Collection Centre at Midland recently to have blood tests. While I waited for my turn, it became apparent that there was only one staff member on duty. The staff member is a delightful, very professional young lady, endeavouring to manage what I feel is an obvious, unrealistic workload.
Based on my observations, I feel it is evident that PathWest needs to review its staffing allocation for this centre. I am concerned that a single staff member is required to provide an efficient service to clients and manage the processing of specimens in accordance with best-practice stipulated timeframes. In my opinion, this situation is a recipe for errors to occur. Furthermore, it is reasonable to anticipate that the staff member is, I believe, likely to be subjected to clients expressing their frustration - in my opinion, not a situation that a responsible organisation should be contributing to.
I appreciate that PathWest has a responsibility to provide a cost-effective service, however, I feel this should not incur unrealistic workloads and increasing the risk of staff potentially being subjected to aggressive incidents.; or being so time-pressured that the risk of error is increased.
