"Well cared for by midwives"

About: Broome Health Campus / Maternity/Midwifery

(as the patient),

As first-time parents, we were enrolled in the Midwifery Group Practice program (MGP) through Broome Hospital. We were delighted when we met our midwife Tegan. Throughout the course of the pregnancy, Tegan was only a phone call away and she was there to answer any questions and concerns we had. Tegan is a wonderful midwife and we can’t recommend the MGP program enough.

On the night we went into labour, Tegan met with us in the maternity ward at the Broome Hospital Campus. As previously discussed with Tegan she knew what our wishes were during labour, which was based on a hypnobirthing class during pregnancy. Our first preference was to have a water birth however due to lack of facilities at Broome Hospital this was not an option. I note that improvement to the facilities in the birth suite to accommodate water births would be very beneficial in giving women a choice in their births, which is something that I believe is very important. In saying this, despite not being able to have a water birth, the birth process and labour was still amazing, I couldn’t fault it at all. The care we received from all the midwives and nurses was wonderful.

Once our baby was born, they needed assistance with their breathing and was taken to the waiting paediatrician and was put on to a breathing machine and subsequently spent a few days in the nursery. The process of birthing the placenta had started and Tegan knew we wanted this to occur naturally. Unfortunately, this wasn’t the case and I was given an injection to birth the placenta due to my bleeding.

After 5 nights in hospital, we were allowed to come home.

Once we were home our midwife Tegan/Alyce supported us. Being a first-time mother this was a difficult time for us, adjusting to being parents, my body healing, dealing with the emotional side of what happened after birth (read story here) and settling back into home was not easy. We did feel supported by Tegan.

Dear Busy mum,

Thank you very much for sharing your experience on Care Opinion.

There is so much current evidence that MGP programs result in improved outcomes for mothers and babies. It was therefore wonderful to hear that your experience with the MGP program was positive and that Tegan and the other midwives were such a support to you throughout your pregnancy, birth and postnatally.

It is marvellous to read that you felt that the care and reassurance was so accessible in the MGP model of care and that it was positive. We are very proud of our midwives and nurses and it is also important to hear that you experienced support with your birth choices as you went forward into labour.

As part of the funding for an upgrade to our birth suites, we are happy to advise you that baths for birthing are included in that plan. We agree that labouring and birthing in water is also backed up with current evidence and can have many clinical benefits as well as helping you to feel comfortable.

I am thankful to read that your baby received the assistance and support they needed from our great neonatal/ paediatric team, however, I do understand that 5 nights must have felt like a very long time. Do feel free to contact us if you would like an opportunity to talk about your experiences in the detail that you deserve. My contact number is 9194 2854 or via email marie.tweedie@health.wa.gov.au

Be assured I will let Tegan, and all of the team be aware of such positive feedback!

We are grateful to hear your story and please know we are very committed to meet the needs of our growing families into the future.

Thanks again and I wish you both all the best as you adjust to the adventure of parenthood!!!

Yours sincerely

Marie Tweedie
