"ENT"

About: Fiona Stanley Hospital Fiona Stanley Hospital / Ear Nose & Throat Fiona Stanley Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a relative),

My spouse has been in constant, significant pain for several months now with a large stone in their saliva gland and a number of smaller stones under their tongue which are multiplying plus a large lump on their thyroid. They have been to emergency at Fiona Stanley a number of times and been sent home without treatment. See my previous story about that experience.

I believe their mental health has completely deteriorated. They told the staff last time we went they were thinking of harming themselves and they were still sent home, without even being offered a psychiatric review, and told to see their GP.

Not a single ENT has even bothered to come and see my spouse for themselves at the hospital. My spouse has lost over 20kgs, can hardly eat or talk, can't drive, work or care for their children.

I feel trying to get through to anybody at the hospital is a joke they just pass me around to different departments before I get cut off. We are completely disgusted by the lack of treatment my spouse has received and had to fight every step of the way.

I have now been told their surgery won't be for at least another 50 days! I truly believe my spouse won't last that long and I can't even be there to watch them because I have to work extra shifts to cover for them not being able to work so we don't lose our house. In my opinion, there has been no duty of care and I will hold the hospital responsible if my spouse harms themselves and my kids are left without their parent.

Dear hadarbh75,

Thank you for taking the time to reach out again following Neil Doverty's response to your first story (please read here). I understand that you and your spouse have been in contact with our Patient and Family Liaison Service this week.

The Patient and Family Liaison Service has obtained an expedited ENT appointment, explained the elective waitlist process, and are currently liaising with the waitlist team to obtain further information regarding your spouse’s surgery date.

I acknowledge that it can be very frustrating waiting for surgery, particularly as your spouse is experiencing pain. I assure you we are doing everything we can to provide the right care to all of our patients as quickly as possible.

Kind regards,

Dr Paul Mark

A/Executive Director, FSFHG
