I had seen a GP about a bite on my forehead and some eye swelling recently and was sent away with oral antihistamines. With little to no relief from the symptoms after a week, I went back to the GP who still did not know what was wrong with me or what to do next. Eventually, I was sent to Sydney Eye Hospital with a referral.
I have always had a fear of anything to do with eyes. I can't even watch people put in contact lenses, so I was extremely apprehensive as my vision was quite blurry at this stage and I didn't know what I would have to have done.
When I was triaged and the nurse called me in she was cheery, bright and friendly which helped to settle my nerves. Straight away, she saw my pupils were slightly unequal and sought a doctor immediately. She was efficient and professional while remaining calm.
Immediately, when I met my doctor I knew I was in safe hands. He walked into my cubicle and told me, whatever it was, he was going to help me. I can't thank that doctor enough. I was there on my own and he made me feel like he was there with me. I was so at ease and I couldn't help but trust him. It was clear he had the knowledge while maintaining a friendly, approachable personality. He was clearly busy and was running around helping everyone while leaving no one feeling forgotten. I couldn't help but think, what a legend. All the while he was still teaching the staff around him.
As a healthcare provider myself, I was reminded of what it's like to be on the other side of things. I hope that I emulate their behaviour, professionalism and kindness with my own patients. I really wanted to thank my 'nurse of the year' Carolina and the absolute cracker of a doctor Dhiren. In my opinion, he has certainly found his calling and hopefully will go on to do amazing things.
"An amazing doctor and fabulous nurse"
