"My birth experience at King Edward Family Birth Centre"

About: King Edward Memorial Hospital / Maternity

(as a service user),

About 16 weeks into my third pregnancy I learned from a friend about the Family Birthing Centre (FBC) at King Edward Memorial Hospital, Subiaco, WA. What appealed to me about the FBC was its intention to replicate a home birthing experience with as little medical intervention as possible, and the midwifery-led care. I applied to have my baby at the FBC and, after being accepted as a low-risk candidate, begun seeing my assigned midwife, Nicole, for my antenatal visits. Nicole saw me at each visit throughout my pregnancy and was present for the birth which allowed for a truly personal and intimate birthing experience. Nicole's 'buddy' midwife, Emily, was also lovely, warm and caring. Both midwives created such a calm and positive environment to give birth in. Unlike my previous birth experiences with an obstetrician at a different hospital, the FBC was much more comfortable and allowed for patient-led care, meaning I could move around the birthing suite freely and deliver the baby in the position my body needed to do so.

After our baby was born in the birthing bath, they required oxygen which was quickly administered. I also experienced a post-partum bleed which required urgent medical attention at the main area of the hospital, so the baby and I were quickly transferred. I received an IV drip with medicine to stop the bleeding and had several clots removed by a doctor. During this time the baby, myself and my partner were never separated, which was very important to me. All of the medical professionals - nurses and doctors - were so warm, caring and reassuring as I was quite shaken after the birth and subsequent bleeding. I was especially impressed that all of these professionals happened to be female, which made me feel even more comfortable given the circumstances.

Overall, my birthing experience at the FBC and the care I received at King Edward Hospital was exceptionally positive. I am so grateful for the commitment to patient care, particularly from our midwife, Nicole, and all of the other health care workers who took such good care of me and my baby.

Forever grateful.
