"Hot drinks on the burns ward"

About: Perth Children's Hospital / Ward 1B - Burns Unit

(as a service user),

Overall we have had a positive experience on our stay on ward 1B at PCH however I couldn’t help notice that there seemed to be numerous parents and visitors taking hot drinks from the lounge into children’s rooms without lids on, and I believe staff not stopping them.

There is a notice in the lounge asking visitors to be aware of the Hot Drinks Policy but I believe the policy isn’t anywhere to be found. I asked our nurse about it and they said that the policy is that visitors are not meant to bring hot drinks in cups without lids into the children’s rooms but that nobody takes much notice if you do. Together we noticed the irony of the burns ward not, in our opinion, protecting children from burns.

Perhaps lids could be provided for parents and visitors having hot drinks cups on the wards and wanting to take them into their child’s room?

It would also be great to not see polystyrene cups used in the hospital; a recyclable option would be great.

Dear yankeejj88,

Thank you for your feedback regarding the management of hot beverages within the ward environment and bringing this to our attention. We are sorry to hear that this was your experience during your hospital stay.

Our Ward 1B visiting guidelines request that visitors do not bring hot drinks onto the ward unless they have a secure lid on them. We ask that all hot drinks are otherwise consumed in the designated beverage bays located on the ward or in the parent lounge at the entrance to ward 1B. In this instance, the usual process would be that visitors sit and drink in these areas. As a result of your feedback, we will reiterate these guidelines with the nursing staff and ensure that this information is being provided to families as a part of the admission process to promote a safe environment.

Kind regards

Lucinda Martin
