"Family member's chronic condition"

About: Joondalup Health Campus / Intensive Care Unit

(as a relative),

I received a call from my sibling advising me our parent was in admitted into Joondalup ICU that day due to a chronic condition. I live rurally and was coincidentally in Perth on a work trip, and as such, I was able to immediately come to ICU where I spent many hours over that week with my siblings.

Although my parent's condition is no surprise to us, the sudden news of further deterioration was unexpected and incredibly upsetting. They spent six days in ICU before being transferred, luckily to recover somewhat, and in this time I was blown away by the level of care they received.

We wanted to spend as much time as we could with my parent as they were so unwell and therefore we all spent a great deal of that week by their bedside in ICU. In this time we were constantly updated, provided with answers to our questions and supported through a very emotional time. There were words spoken and gestures made that I feel went far beyond the role of the nurses, making the overall experience one of growth rather than trauma.

With current world events, I feel grateful to live in WA with the level of care and expertise we have in our medical system.

Dear scorecarddj98,

It was lovely to read your praise and thanks for our team in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). This can be an overwhelming and confronting environment to be in with your loved one and family. Care and compassion is an essential part of the holistic way we care for our patients and their families. We are very grateful that in this challenging time for you all, you have spared a moment to pass on your gratitude.

Having regular communication with families at these times is vital for the treating teams. It does sound like this was the case. Your kind words have been shared amongst the entire team that were involved in the medical and nursing care of your parent. This has been received with deep gratitude amongst the team.

I appreciate how frightening it can sometimes be for patients and family members when a person’s condition deteriorates to the point that an ICU admission is necessary, so it is reassuring to know that you and your family were supported emotionally and that you were regularly updated regarding your parent’s condition.

On behalf of Joondalup Health Campus, I wish your loved one a speedy recovery.

Yours sincerely

Paul Taylor-Byrne

Acting Director of Clinical Services
