"Lack of proper care"

About: Nepean Hospital / Emergency Department Nepean Hospital / Respiratory medicine

(as a service user),

The following account is my experience at the Nepean Public Hospital.

At the request of my Lung specialist, I attended the Dept of Nuclear Medicine to undergo a number of lung tests at about mid-morning. The result of the test suggested that I may have clots on the lungs & I was directed to the emergency dept for further urgent tests.

This was about an hour later. The test involved putting some dye through my kidneys and as they are not functioning as they should there was some concern over this.

We sat in the emergency department until after 8pm with no communication as to what was going to happen. Finally, half an hour later, a doctor came to tell me that they were going to go ahead with the test. They advised me that I would be given a full bag of Saline before and after the test. When I arrived to have the test they had no knowledge or instructions to give me the Saline, so they went ahead with the test anyway. And then after me expressing my concern, said they would give me the Saline after the procedure which they did. Finally, we left the hospital close to midnight.

We had spent the whole day in the emergency dept feeling very worried about Covid given our ages (senior citizens) as we watched people pouring in and out throughout the day. On arrival, they were having their temperatures checked but I believe no supervision as to hand sanitising. My observation was that one in twenty went to the hand sanitiser and sanitised their hands. The others wandered off into the casualty wards without doing so or sat with us in the emergency department.

On returning to my lung specialist four weeks later I was informed that they had instructed the hospital that when I was released I was to be on a blood-thinning treatment (Warfarin) I then informed them that this did not occur. So once again I was the victim of what I consider to be gross negligence.

I have private health cover and usually attend Nepean Private health, However these procedures needed to be done in the public system. The difference between both hospital I feel is remarkable, one highly efficient and professional and the other a shambles and negligent in my opinion. My concern is for those who cannot afford private health cover, I believe the Public Hospital is heading towards third world standard.
