"My child received no treatment"

About: Box Hill Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

My child spent nearly 8 hours in the Emergency Department waiting room seeking help. They have hepatitis and mental health problems. They were dangerously depressed and talked of suicide. I rang to find out what was happening when they had been there for 3 hours, and on hearing they were still in the waiting room, informed the nurse of their mental vulnerability and could they please see to my child ASAP.

After multiple calls, and being disconnected and hung up on without speaking to anyone, I finally got through to be told my child was still waiting but a nurse was in the waiting room with them.

I was called by the emergency room after the 8-hour ordeal and asked if my child was here. It seems my child had left without being seen. The only thing I can say is, in my opinion, this is gross negligence. I believe 8 hours is far too long to leave a vulnerable, sick person in the waiting area.

I now don't know where my child is or if they're even still alive. I believe this is totally unacceptable.

Dear chassishz43,

Thank you so much for taking the time to post these comments regarding your child’s experience and your expressing concern for their health. I am sorry this has been your experience.

My immediate priority is to connect you with our mental health team and so if you could please call our Patient Relations Advisors on 1800 EASTERN and we can then connect you through.

By using this same number, we will also be able to review the specific events and circumstances of your child’s care (once their safety has been ascertained). For this part, you could also choose to emailing us at feedback@easternhealth.org.au. If you choose to call please be aware that it is possible that the Patient Relations Advisors may be on another call at the time you ring and if so you will be invited to leave a message so they can return your call.

I hope we hear from you and my apologies again.

Kind regards

David
