"Day procedure"

About: St John of God Mt Lawley Hospital

(as the patient),

I had a colonoscopy at St John Of God Mt Lawley recently. The Gastroenterologist & Anaesthetist were fine, happy with their care but when I woke after the procedure I felt dreadful, dizzy, couldn't lift my head, couldn't eat or drink. The nurse sat me up with the bed controls & I told them I felt awful & asked to lie down. The nurse said I had been asleep a long time and needed to wake as there were other patients to come in. I could not sit up so curled up on the bottom of the bed where it was flat. I eventually drink a glass of water but my head was still spinning. The nurse continued to tell me to wake up & sit up. Eventually, another nurse came & lowered the head of the bed so I could lie down comfortably. I told them I felt I was being tortured, the nurse said that was strong language. I rested but still felt awful if I sat up, couldn't eat or drink.

Several nurses appeared, they put the bed rails up & said they were taking me "out the back". I didn't know what this meant but didn't feel it was safe for me so refused. I was then told to get dressed & go. I struggled to get dressed on the bed, still very dizzy & unwell. A nurse came to walk me to the waiting room. When I stood up I had to hold onto the wall. I believe the nurse witnessed this & gave me a brochure on preventing falls! I tried walking around the waiting room holding chairs but felt worse so sat in a chair with my chest on my knees & my head hanging down. I stayed there until my partner came for me. They assisted me to walk to the car. I had only managed to drink 1 glass of water & a few sips from my drink bottle, could not eat. We got over the freeway then had to pull over to vomit a few times. I continued to vomit at home, felt dreadful. I lay down until I felt a little better & ate a piece of dry toast then slept until mid afternoon. I woke feeling better, all I needed was a little more time.

This response has been published by Care Opinion on behalf of St John of God Mt Lawley Hospital:

Dear Dizzy59,

Many thanks for getting in touch and sharing your experience at SJG Mt Lawley Hospital.

I was sorry to read that you felt so bad after the procedure, it sounds like you had a very unpleasant experience.

You would have received fairly deep sedation for your colonoscopy. The time taken for a full recovery can vary between people and in some, can take some time. It would appear we didn’t observe this closely enough nor take this it into account when assessing you after your procedure. I fully agree that giving you instructions and leaflets when you were so groggy was unhelpful.

Noting that you needed assistance to get to the car, and particularly that you vomited several times on the way home, and then afterwards, it does suggest that we let you go home too soon. On reflection, a longer period of monitoring, or even transferring you to a ward if that was needed, would have been clinically preferable until you were confirmed to be fully recovered.

On behalf of the hospital, I do apologise once again. Patient safety and patient experience are key strategic aims of our organisation, both of which fell short on this occasion.

We take your comments seriously and constructively and will look at how to prevent this kind of episode occurring again.

Lastly, I am pleased to note that you speak highly of your gastroenterologist and anaesthetist and will pass on your comments to them.

Kind Regards

Paul Dyer

CEO St John of God Mt. Lawley Hospital

Update posted by Dizzy59 (the patient)

Thank you for your response Paul Dyer. If you genuinely don't want this to happen again I believe you would need to change the whole focus of that unit. It was not my fault I didn't wake as the nurse wanted me to. It was not my fault there were other patients to come in. When I spoke to the Nurse Manager on the phone they said the nurse who looked after me & made these comments to me was highly regarded, very efficient, etc... In my opinion, I could only describe that nurse as a bully. However, I believe other staff members saw me holding onto the wall when I stood up and did nothing, so I feel it would seem attitudes need to change.
