"A very judgemental doctor"

About: Joondalup Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I presented to Joondalup Health Campus with the beginning of an infection (phlebitis) and a tremor in my arm after several attempts at an emergency cannula a few days prior. The triage nurse was very friendly, caring and professional.

As there was a long wait I was moved to the emergency treatment unit instead of the main department where I met, who I feel was, the rudest doctor of my life! They didn’t even ask what had caused the injury to my arm but, in my opinion, clearly assumed I was an IV drug user. The doctor offered no advice, but, I  feel, just fobbed me off with panadeine and a sick note for work. They did not even apologise when they caused severe pain in my arm by touching/squeezing the area.

Dear bee91,

Thank you for providing details of your recent experience attending Joondalup Health Campus (JHC) Emergency Department (ED). I acknowledge that it must have been distressing for you to feel that staff assumed your injury was as a result of drug-taking behaviour.

I am sorry to read that you did not experience a standard of care and customer service that we would expect you to receive with regard to both the assessment process and staff attitude and behaviour.

I would like to look into this matter but in order to do this, I need to identify the staff who interacted with you on this day. Please can you contact our consumer liaison service so staff can obtain the relevant information on 08 9400 9672 or consumerliaison.jhc@ramsayhealth.com.au

I am pleased to read that you had a positive experience with the triage nurse and I have forwarded your kind feedback to the Clinical Nurse Manager (CNM) of ED who will make sure that this gets seen by all the triage staff.

I hope that you are feeling better, however, in view of your concerns that you did not receive appropriate information or discharge advice, if you still have concerns about your arm, you may wish to discuss this further with your General Practitioner.

Yours sincerely

Paul Taylor-Byrne

Acting Director of Clinical Services

Joondalup Health Campus
