"Elderly patient with broken nose"

About: Noarlunga Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a relative),

My parent tripped over in the back yard, broke their nose. My parent is elderly. It was a busy day so we knew we would have a long wait. We had been there about 3 hours. We do not think or assume that the wait time is on purpose or any other absurd assumptions.

My parent was chatting to a parent and their young child. We had noticed that there seemed to be a lot of kids coming in and they would go through fairly quickly. Again, not a complaint, just an observation. And of course, the young ones need to be seen.

As the nurse was at the door waiting for that parent and child, my own parent, who was in the middle of chatting with them, commented something about "yes the kids need to be seen first". Not at all in a negative way. Chatting. As was the parent to us, chatting, telling us about the child's sore shoulder.

The nurse suddenly moves toward my parent, elderly, broken nose, blood still on face. The nurse leans over and, in my opinion, quite assertively, starts their rant, asking if there was a problem here and repeating the question a second time a little stronger. The nurse stated that they take the children through to the children's waiting area near pediatrics. They went on further, I believe assuming my parent was having a go at the parent and their child. The nurse didn't give us a chance to utter a word, and my parent tried, but the nurse wasn't waiting for a response as, I believe, they had already assumed we were saying something negative. The nurse took the parent and child through and I sat there wondering, at first, what had happened. In my opinion, it was completely uncalled for and made an upset situation feel worse.

The three hours we had been there, my parent was ok. Sore but ok. They then started coughing up congealed blood that had probably been running down the back of their throat. I went up to the desk and asked if someone could check on my parent. The assistant came over and talked with parent who coughed up some blood while the staff member was there. My parent was also starting to get cold and shivering. I said that "during the three hours we've been here..." I couldn't finish what I was saying because the staff member seemed to assume I was complaining about the wait time. I said " No, no, I'm trying to explain that my parent's been ok during that time, I'm not complaining, just saying they have been ok and now they're not".

The staff member said that if my parent's condition gets worse, to tell them. I said "that's what I'm trying to do now, this is my parent becoming worse".

In my opinion, the staff member didn't want to know, and walked off. My parent was shivering so I tentatively asked for a blanket. My parent was still cold, so I asked a nurse nearby if I could get another blanket. This nurse said they would in 5 minutes.

My parent was shivering and starting to breathe heavily and said they felt like they were going to pass out. I called for assistance to anyone behind the desk and my parent was taken around the corner and made comfortable on a bed.

I understand it was a busy day, and it's a stressful time. It is stressful for everyone. Especially an elderly person who had tripped over, flat on their face, and couldn't get up because of their old knees. My parent had dragged themselves along the pavement to get inside and had scratched up their arms and feet. Blood on the grazes and cuts on their nose. Blood around their mouth. Feet all cut and grazed. And all my parent got after 4 hours, in my opinion, was a nurse in their face assuming my parent was being rude to a young parent and their child, and a different nurse seemingly ignoring the signs of shock.
