"Pregnancy and birthing journey at KEMH"

About: King Edward Memorial Hospital / Community Midwifery Program King Edward Memorial Hospital / Maternity

(as the patient),

I've had a very positive experience with my first pregnancy, birthing and postnatal journey with the MGP4 team at King Edward Memorial Hospital.

The best part was that I had the same midwife throughout and had been introduced to the other midwives in her team (the MGP4 team) over the course of my appointments. This made me very comfortable with speaking up promptly whenever I was concerned about anything during my pregnancy. I was not subject to conflicting advice from a different midwife each appointment like some of my friends have experienced in the public system at other hospitals. The fact that I had the same midwife during my labour and birthing as I had through my pregnancy care made me relaxed during birthing and I believe it made my labour and birthing experience smooth.

We had formulated my birth plan together, so I was very much relaxed while in labour and birthing at the hospital because I didn't need to explain or clarify anything. Having previously discussed with my midwife all my feelings and concerns about labour in light of my prior episodes of Trigeminal Neuralgia, I was at ease during labour and birthing knowing well that my midwife knew everything she needed to. Even the postnatal care I received was from the same midwife and the MGP4 team, which made me feel comfortable and I was open with all the questions and concerns I had about taking care of my newborn. The continuity of care offered by KEMH through the provision of the same midwife and care team throughout the journey is a great concept and I would love to have the same experience with any future pregnancies.

Dear brantw99,

Congratulations on the birth of your first child; this is such an exciting and special time in anyone’s life! Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with the Women and Newborn Health Service (WNHS). I am glad to hear that you had such a positive pregnancy and birthing journey.

Our staff strive to provide our patients and their families with the support to achieve positive outcomes during their pregnancy journey. WNHS is incredibly proud of the maternity care that is provided by our staff and the way they work with our patients. WNHS would certainly like to expand the Midwifery Group Practice (MGP) service for our families in the future as our numbers grow so that more women in the community can access care from the same small group of midwives for the duration of their pregnancy, labour and birth.

I will ensure that your kind feedback is provided to the MGP4 team.

Thank you once again for sharing your feedback with me. I wish you and your family all the best for the future.

Kind regards

Jodi Graham
