"Antenatal preferences"

About: King Edward Memorial Hospital / Maternity

(as the patient),

Terrible experience. I have asked multiple times to enter the MGP4 program but I have never received any answer. Now, I am stuck with the blue team and I see a different midwife at every appointment. I have to explain everything at every appointment as apparently, no one has the time to read through the pregnancy book.

I feel that no one cares about my preferences. I do not understand why no one even cares to give me some sort of answer or explanation. This situation is so frustrating that sometimes I cry through my appointments.

The solution for the blue team is for me to see a clinical psychologist, I believe rather than take some responsibility for denying me the women-centred model of care that I would have liked.

Dear doradojw95,

I would like to start by congratulating you on your pregnancy; this is such an exciting time in anyone’s life. Thank you for taking the time to raise your concerns and share your frustrations. Women and Newborn Health Service (WNHS) strives to provide quality patient-centred care and I do apologise that we have not met your expectations.

Although we would like to expand the Midwifery Group Practice (MGP) service to our families in the future, the program is currently oversubscribed and more specifically our MGP4 group is booked out until May 2021 with their current waiting list. In addition, to be eligible for the MGP care model there is various criteria that you need to meet, for example living within the KEMH postcode catchment. Patients who require ongoing Obstetric or Medical input into their care may also not be eligible.

I do acknowledge your disappointment to not have secured a place in the MGP program and I agree that it is not ideal that you have not received a response to your request. This is not the level of care that we strive for as a health service.

I would like to apologise to you once again and thank you for bringing this matter to my attention. Our team is dedicated to ensuring the birth of your child is a wonderful and memorable experience in a supportive and caring environment and feedback such as yours will allow us to make an improvement to the way we deliver our service. I wish you all the best for the future.

Kind regards,

Jodi Graham
