"Surgery wait times"

About: Sydney / Sydney Eye Hospital / 2 West & Hand Clinic

(as the patient),

I went to hand clinic for surgery recently.

The doctor is great, nurses were great really trying to help. But I believe you have too many people. I have to have finger surgery asap. But that day they said I shouldn’t eat. I cancelled meetings that day due to my surgery. My partner had to cancel their business trip. But nothing happened that day. I had to come back in a few days time.

This particular injury affects my wellbeing and mental health. I can’t do much. I can’t drive and can’t do so many things. I have found it really stressful especially when I am facing additional stress, it becomes really hard to handle. I spent all day watching COVID news while waiting for surgery with so many other people. I don’t think that this should be happening in a hospital environment especially with COVID.

The staff are super polite and super nice. I feel they are trying to do their best but they could not speed up the surgery process.

Dear startg47,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience regarding the challenges you faced when accessing surgery for your injured finger. I am concerned to hear of your experience during what must have been a stressful time for you. I apologise for the inconvenience the change of surgery date has caused you and your partner.

I am glad to hear the staff were trying their best for you and thank you for acknowledging their efforts and standard of professionalism. This time of year is particularly challenging for surgery and we will always schedule surgery by clinical priority and this does cause delays in some circumstances. I will certainly take your concerns to the Operating Theatre Manager and the Hand Surgical team who are always keen to improve processes and our patients' surgical journey. We will review the seating/waiting arrangements for our patients to ensure the COVID safe distancing is being adhered to. Please contact me on SESLHD-SSEHExecutiveServices@health.nsw.gov.au if there have been further delays or concerns.

All the best for your recovery and I hope you are able to spend Christmas with your family and friends.

Kind regards

Alan
