"Staff not sanitising area"

About: Rockingham General Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I was discharged from the trauma unit at another hospital recently. I have a fairly serious wound from a bicycle accident (handlebar penetrated my leg).

The next day in the morning, I had a lot of blood/red liquid, and being unsure if it is a problem, I headed down to the emergency department at Rockingham hospital.

A young couple was in front of me to be triaged. I stood my proper social distance.

One of them was sneezing and coughing. Sitting at the Triage counter, I felt they were all over the place, leaning on everything, the same individual was handling the chairs, rubbing their hands up and down the leg chairs. I believe they were touching everything they seem to be able to. The other one was leaning on their arms on the counter literally breathing on the counter. They were given masks and wore them. I could hear they mentioned they travelled in from another state. I could not hear from which. They were whisked away to a side entrance - fetched by another staff member, who wore a mask themselves. I was called forward, as I was next in line.

I refused to enter the space where they were. I asked the person on the other side of the glass if the previous people were a potential COVID case. They said yes, but low risk.

I refused to go sit there. I asked to be served at another counter. The staff member rolled their eyes at me but did as I asked. Seriously, sorry. I don't care if there is a 0.00001% chance that the person may have COVID, it's still a chance. I am a senior citizen, and I have a serious wound and my own immune system is down due to all the meds and other (heart-related) stress I have been having in the past month.

I find it stupid that your staff did not sanitise the area. It is a potential, no matter how low, risk. After I was helped, the staff member went back to that cubical and called a very elderly couple forward, and they went to go sit in the same chairs these two previous people were in. In my opinion, there was no effort whatsoever done to sanitise the area. I feel that is not right, and staff need to be more diligent. In my opinion, all it takes is one stupid for us in WA to have community spread.

I feel they need to take COVID more serious, no matter how low risk. I will need to be practically dead before I go back there.

Dear neptunenh55,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. Our hospital has policy and procedures to guide staff regarding infection prevention and management of suspected COVID presentations. There is a regular cleaning schedule in place for the Emergency Department (ED) waiting room and, in addition to this, the hospital support services team do undertake immediate cleaning as requested.

I am very sorry you felt the triage area was unsafe and am disappointed that the cleaning of the waiting area wasn’t adhered to as a priority. As a result of your feedback, all ED staff have been reminded of the need to ensure that the assessment area is appropriately cleaned between patients.

Thank you again for bringing this issue to my attention and I wish you all the very best for your recovery from your injury.

Regards

Kath Smith
