I presented to Kalgoorlie Emergency Department recently in the night with numbness down my right side. I went through from Triage, straight away had all tests possible done.
Everyone from Triage through to been admitted onto B Ward for observation overnight with suspected TIA were great, I could not fault the process. I had a CT Scan, lots of blood taken and had an ECG with overnight monitoring, all signs were good. They sent an E-Referral for another hospital's Neurology Team and Cardiology Team in Perth, also a follow-up Outpatient appointment in Kalgoorlie for my blood results.
My gripe here is the aftercare. I called the other hospital to see if they received the referral, only to be told it was rejected and sent back to Kalgoorlie. I then called back to Kalgoorlie and was put through to Outpatients. No explanation as to why it was rejected, apart from, the Dr has looked at your referral and you are a category 2 (no explanation as to what this means). To be told the only appointment available is in September (in my opinion, what a joke) I asked is there nothing earlier?
To be told no, apart from maybe go back to your GP as a private patient in your referral. This I don’t understand, as I was admitted as a Private Patient not Public and to me, why does that make a difference?
It is very frustrating, as well as scary when this is my first time ever with this presentation. Also, my Outpatient appointment for blood results isn’t until another month, to which I find wrong, knowing it could be something serious and anything can happen between now and a months time.
How are you meant to carry on working and not stress about things?
"Timely service"
