"Grateful for the care I received"

About: Fiona Stanley Hospital / Respiratory Medicine Department & Ward 5D

(as the patient),

About a year ago, I presented myself to another hospital having shortness of breath and having no energy, after being triaged I was taken in straight away and put on oxygen and ECG monitoring (this is where my memory stops).

A few days later I was intubated because of having Influenza A and Bilateral Pneumonia, I was then sent to Fiona Stanley Hospital and put in a coma on ECMO and dialysis for 3 weeks. During that time I faced some complications, I developed 2 DVTs and acquired a pressure sore, when I finally woke up the team of nurses, doctors, physios, dietitians, specialists I had around me were amazing.

I eventually moved to the respiratory ward to continue my recovery, while I was there I had the two most supportive physios, Tash and Tenae. With the help of them, I learnt to walk again, also Dr John played a big part in my recovery with his team. I had my pressure sore debrided a month later, I was then discharged end of that month. I then came back a few months later to have a flap rotation done of the pressure sore area. The plastics team that I was under do an amazing job the support and care I received from them was top-level. Plastics nurse Jemma broke everything down and made sure I understood everything that was going on. I'm so grateful to have received the level of care I have and am forever indebted for saving my life.
