I am a volunteer ambulance officer as well as a fulltime fellow clinical nurse. My colleague and I were called out to a patient recently in the middle of the night. The patient was taken to KRH for treatment and was in a decent amount of pain (8/10 when not moving and 10/10 on movement).
On arrival at KRH with our patient, we were greeted by a number of staff who, in my opinion, could not give us the time of day and several staff were standing at the ED nurses station chatting.
The triage nurse was particularly abrupt in my opinion, did not even stand up from their chair to welcome our patient, asked me minimal questions without even making eye contact with me, then proceeded to work through the webpas details, marking our patient's pain score as a 3/10. I am unsure how they came to this remarkable score as they did not even look at the patient nor did they ask me what their pain score was!
The nurse then pointed to the waiting room and said the patient is just going to have to go to the waiting room. I think this is unacceptable. As a volunteer from Coolgardie, our trip to KRH takes us an average of 2 hours. We do not get paid for this, we see it as a service for our community and it would be nice to be greeted with an empathetic and caring team to handover to, especially in the middle of the night.
