"A Positive Birth at Derby Hospital"

About: Bunbury Hospital / Maternity Derby Hospital / Maternity/Midwifery Derby Hospital / Theatre

(as a service user),

Late last year we completed the Positive Birth program run by Kasey at Bunbury Hospital via Zoom. The course was amazing and we came away knowing what we did and didn't want for our birth and felt that we had a strong voice in our appointments.

One morning labour started so we calmly went in to hospital for a quick check, knowing things hadn't quite progressed enough and that we would be going home after our check. It was soon discovered by the doctor that baby was in fact breech and that I would have to have a caesarean to deliver. Although this was a shock and a surprise we were able to remain positive as we knew this was the best outcome. As baby was not in distress we were able to still go home for a couple of hours to prepare both physically and mentally.

As labour pains got more intense, we were able to use techniques from the positive birth program. The theatre staff were wonderful and let us put on our labour playlist that we had made. After a quick bit of oxygen our little baby was ready to have skin to skin contact and remained with me for the immediate hours following birth.

The next day posed some challenges and scares for me but the team of midwives, doctors and ward nurses were quick to assist.

The midwives were a wealth of knowledge and I don't believe we would have had a better experience any where else in Australia!

Dear Day patient,

Thank you for taking the time to share your birth experience on Care Opinion.

Congratulations on the recent birth of your baby. I can only imagine what a surprise and shock it may have been to discover that bubs was upside down. I am relieved that the strategies and techniques you learnt through Kasey's classes were able to assist you to get through the experience.

I know that the skills that you learnt during the antenatal classes will continue to be useful as you navigate your way through the parenthood journey. I will pass on your positive feedback and your story to Kasey.

Derby has an amazing team of clinicians and I am sure they too will be pleased to know that they were able to provide you with the support and assistance you required.

We all wish you the best for the future.

Regards

Katrina Jones
