Our first child was born recently at Joondalup hospital. My partner and I can not thank the hospital staff enough for our treatment.
From our initial presentation, our wishes were respected. My partner wanted to slowly upgrade her pain management as needed which the midwife not only facilitated but also guided us through. As soon an epidural was requested, the midwife initiated the process through the resident anaesthetist who was so calm and pleasant she immediately put us both at ease by being informative but not overwhelming.
Once my partner became fully dilated the midwife guided us through the next and final stage of labour. After over an hour of pushing and no significant progression, the attending obstetrics registrar was called in who performed an urgent bedside ultrasound and discovered our baby had become stuck and could soon become very distressed.
Our situation was quickly escalated and an urgent cesarean section was arranged. The obstetrician was so committed that rather than waiting for an overrun orderly department he, along with the help of the midwives, transferred my partner immediately to theatre.
Upon entering theatre, we were individually and personally greeted by a team of dedicated professionals from various medical backgrounds. The consultant obstetrician explained the situation to us calmly and gave us our options. Being overwhelmed, we told him we trusted him and to do what he felt best, something we would not have been comfortable doing had we not felt so well supported.
Upon deciding on emergency cesarean the anesthetist, who had immediately met us on the way down to theatre, controlled my partner's medications. She stayed up by her head and with her calm and positive nature continued to reassure us both everything would be fine.
During this extremely overwhelming period, I was constantly comforted by all staff, especially the midwife who I had been able to establish a relationship with and therefore felt comfortable.
It was clear being in that theatre that all the staff were there for us. Not because they had to be or for the money but because they wanted to be.
We are so thankful for all involved in the delivery of our beautiful little boy. We could not fault the service and are extremely appreciative to all involved.
