After two ambulance Emergency Department presentations to Midland SJOG public hospital for my parent on two occasions recently, we presented at the ED Department at Murdoch earlier this month in desperation as my parent's symptoms have not lessened.
These symptoms included: sudden onset of extreme headache and pain on the LH side of their neck (this occurred last month), light sensitivity and nausea. They have not eaten for a week as the pain was so bad.
After being dismissed twice from Midland ED with apparently just a muscular spasm the first time, and neck strain the second time by the Dr, we took my parent to the ED at SJOG Murdoch earlier this month hoping to get some explanation as the pain had not lessened.
A Dr saw my parent at SJOG Murdoch and discharged them immediately with some different painkillers for what they believe was just my parent's sore neck.
As it transpired, my parent had a subarachnoid haemorrhage (bleeding on the brain) and was rushed to another hospital several days later for radiological coiling. If my parent had had a second aneurysm, their treating doctor there said there was a 60-90% chance of death.
I write with exasperation that even on the third emergency department presentation, the doctor did not order a head scan which I believe would have found the issue and even though my parent's symptoms (outlined earlier) clearly point to a Subarachnoid Haemorrhage. I believe this is neuro 101.
In my opinion, shame, shame, shame on our Emergency Departments and clearly incompetent doctors who showed such lack of respect and lack of treatment of my parent.
Our family is left feeling only sadness that we feel unable to trust our Emergency Department.
