"Day Surgery"

About: Albany Health Campus / Day Procedure Unit Albany Health Campus / Surgical Ward

(as the patient),

I needed Carpal Tunnel release in both hands I waited 1 year for the first one to be done under local anesthetic. I then had to wait another year for the other hand. Because the first one was quite painful I chose a light sedation. I ended up laying in a bed for 5 hours and my spouse rang at 4.00 pm and asked if they could come and collect me and they said that my surgery was cancelled, but they hadn't told me yet.

1-year wait, 20 hrs no food and 6 hrs with no water. My spouse lost a day's pay. In my opinion, emergencies are not an excuse. I heard 3 more people come in while I was laying there and none of them sounded in distress.

Really. So this is why I have worked since I was 15. Paid my taxes, never taken money from the government, done my 4 years in the military. What a disgrace in my opinion.

When they built our new hospital, why was the public apparently not informed that it was a training hospital and would have less beds?

Mysteriously, I feel, the radiology department was privatised so that unless you have plenty of money, in my opinion, you can just get sick and die because you can't afford scans etc. It seems if you have a health care card and, in my opinion, have never worked a day in your life, you are good to go. If you need placement in an aged care facility and you have to stay in hospital for more than 30 days, while waiting, I believe, you have to pay $50 per day for the privilege.

The apparent incompetence of Federal and State Government astounds me.

Dear Calypso,

Thank you for posting your story on Care Opinion regarding the care you received at Albany Health Campus. I am extremely sorry that your procedure was cancelled and that we did not communicate effectively with you as to why this happened. I would really like the opportunity to find out why your procedure was cancelled and why and how our communication processes failed to keep you informed. It is so important for us to know when things haven’t gone well so that we can find out why and put actions in place to make sure it doesn’t happen again to other patients. If you are happy to get in touch then you can call me directly on 9892 2325 or email me at Trisha.Power@health.wa.gov.au

Kind regards

Trisha Power

Dear Calypso,

Thank you for contacting me directly and again, I am really sorry that your surgery was cancelled and that you had to wait so long to be told it was cancelled. Your feedback has been shared with the relevant managers. All have expressed their regret about this incident and the impact it has had on you and your husband.

An investigation has been conducted into what happened. As a result, a process is now in place to ensure when a decision is made to cancel elective surgery patients are informed straight away.

Please don’t hesitate to call me if I can provide you with any further information or be of any further assistance. My telephone number is 9892 2325.

Yours sincerely,

Trisha Power
