This facility has saved our family a huge amount of stress and heartache.
Our adult child (mentally 5yrs) has been self-harming since early last year. Biting their shoulders, wrists, belting their head etc. They have oven mitts on their hands to lessen the damage when they pinch or punch but by far, the worse injury they managed to inflict on themselves was putting their teeth through their lip, causing horrendous damage. Not once but three times. Having been repaired three times, something needed to be done.
We approached the Special needs dentist desperate for help. They are the ONLY Special needs dentist in WA and the beautiful staff there created a set of mouth guards that enabled my child to still eat and drink but protect them against themselves in further harming the lip. Nowhere else could do this!
Upon a recent follow-up visit, we were told that this clinic has found out the City Council is ending its lease in June. I believe they have not offered a suitable alternative. In my opinion, you cannot simply attach a service so specialised to another practice. I believe the beauty of this service is the facility itself. It is a single property with a sizable waiting room which gives patients a quiet, relaxing place to wait, helping parents and support workers calm and prepare them for their visit.
I believe the lease should be extended for at least a year or two so another suitable property can be found. Taking this service, which is so specialised, and throwing it in another noisy busy practice, in my opinion, is not practical. We need to act now and appeal to the City Council to extend this lease and would be so Government can find a suitable property to relocate such a precious resource.
