I had just had a partial removal of my right kidney (contained cancerous tumour) 8 days earlier when I heard a snap in my abdomen then a rush to the toilet only to pass volumes of blood which was unstoppable. My wife made a 000 call and we had an ambulance at our door within 10 minutes - paramedic arrested the haemorrhaging - and a quick trip to Fiona Stanley Hospital ED where a triage team was waiting. My BP was stabilised and litres transfused. A CT organized to determine where the bleed was emanating from.
Moved to a private room in Urology Ward (6A) where exceptional care was provided by the Doctors, Nurses and staff whilst they planned the solution. Embolization of the artery in the kidney being required.
Using advanced medical imaging technology, the team led, by Dr David, were able to successfully locate and undertake the coil embolisation of three pseudo-aneurysms, whilst I could watch on being under a local aesthetic.
I returned to Urology and after an hour was able to eat, a further two hours I could be mobilized - although three-way catheter made this a tad difficult.
Another day of exceptional care, although a replacement catheter was painful. But eventually, all the blood clots were removed and discharge was arranged for the following morning.
Debriefing provided by the team and post-procedure detail provided by the nurse, which proved most beneficial as once home I again experienced blood in my urine for a short time.
I’ll continue to take life very easy for a while but I am very thankful for the outstanding care provided to me.
