"Staff attitude"

About: Frankston Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a friend),

Recently I tried to drop off some drinks and clothes for my friend who is a patient on AMSU. This patient's doctors had encouraged them to go for a supervised walk and that they should also drink lemonade. The nurse had agreed that one of the PSAs could accompany them to the front of the hospital to collect these things.

The first PSA was happy to bring the patient down. However I believe the second PSA was not happy with this as the first PSA knew the patient outside of work. At shift handover the afternoon nurse said that it would be unfair to the other patients for the first PSA to accompany my friend out however, upon waiting outside the hospital, I saw many patients out for a smoke and others coming down to collect belongings from people outside.

I was informed that the second PSA would come to the concierge desk where I was waiting to collect these things however I never saw them before I believe they reported back to the ward that I was not at the concierge desk. The other PSA was kind enough to actually come to the concierge desk to collect these things and they were in tears, due, I believe, to the way in which the second PSA had spoken to them all day.

The patient told me that the second PSA's behaviour had also made them cry as they were looking forward to the walk and some fresh air. I understand that this attitude is not unlike this person and in my opinion, the way in which they acted today can be seen as harmful to the patients' mental health. My friend has also reported that this person throws out unopened biscuits and removes their meal tray when they are not finished eating. I believe the patient's diet is critical to their condition and recovery.

I should also add that when I brought my friend into ED they had to wait 5 hours to be seen despite having a card and a letter from their treating team that this patient must be triaged as a minimum cat 3 and that their condition can lead to coma and death very quickly.

In addition to this, my friend was in hospital for 5 days and had not been given a shower before then despite asking.

Very disappointed in Frankston Hospital. Next time we will make the hour drive to the hospital with their treating team where they take my friend's condition seriously and they are allowed to get some fresh air.
