"Spinal injury"

About: Morawa Perenjori Health Service / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

My child suffered a spinal injury, I took them to the ED at Morawa, was met by amazing nurses, Andrea and Romy. Andrea completed the initial assessment and sent triage documents to ETS.

Another nurse came in and tried to cannulate my child, it appeared they were rough, placed the sharp on my child's chest and when they couldn’t flush the cannula the nurse wriggled it in my child's arm. My child asked the nurse to stop and yet they still continued to try and flush it. When I told the nurse it had tissued, they said no, it’s fine. I firmly asked the nurse to get away from my child, I pulled out the cannula and held my child's arm with gauze.

Romy stepped in and was amazing in reassuring my child and cannulated them with ease.

I am angry that my child asked this other nurse to stop and they still continued.

Dear corridorky67,

Thank you for taking the time to write to us with your feedback about your child’s treatment at the Emergency Department at Morawa Hospital. Everyone should expect to feel safe and heard in a health care environment and I am sorry that this was not your child’s experience and apologise for the distress that has caused you and your family.

I was concerned about your experience and have discussed your feedback with the team to ensure that other patients and their families do not go through a similar experience. Education on consent and patient-centred care, particularly when working with children, has been undertaken. I would like to assure you that the nurse involved in your care was a participant and has expressed their apologies for any distress their behaviour may have caused you and your child.

I would really appreciate the opportunity to discuss the concerns you have raised and would be very grateful if you would contact me. My name is Di Franklin and I am the Acting Operations Manager for the Midwest Murchison and if you are happy to, please call me on phone 9956 2268 or via email at di.franklin@health.wa.gov.au.

I want to thank you for your positive feedback about the support and care you received from Romy and Andrea. Knowing what went well during your experience is also valuable to the service as it lets us know what is important to our consumers and how we have met their needs. I was also very happy to hear that when you experienced difficulties Romy provided the reassurance you and your child needed as this time.

Please be reassured that your feedback will be used so that we may continually improve the care and service we provide. I hope your child is progressing well with their recovery.

Kind Regards

Di Franklin
