I believe the anaesthesiologist lied to me before surgery. The anesthesiologist administered some medicine without my consent.
I presented myself at casualty and was diagnosed with a ruptured appendix. I had not had any previous surgery in my life. I wanted to ask a couple of questions first. In particular, I wanted to know what drug was going to be given to me before it was administered.
The anaesthesiologist administered an unknown substance by cannula without seeking permission or obtaining my consent. The substance rendered me unconscious for 4 hours. I woke up with three scars on my abdomen and unable to walk.
I felt violated because a drug was administered without my consent.
I felt violated because, in my opinion, I was deprived of the opportunity to decline the surgery which I was considering doing.
I felt dehumanised because I was lied to.
I felt like an animal because the anaesthesiologist did not speak to me and give me information about what drug they were proposing to use, how it would work, what side effects might be and obtain my consent before they administered it.
"Patient consent"
