"Infection Control"

About: Kalgoorlie Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I recently presented to Kalgoorlie emergency with heart pains. I was generally satisfied with the care provided until just before discharge when a person (I don't know if doctor or assistant) removed my cannula and then proceed to help mop up the substantial amount of blood spilt during this process without any gloves. In the process, their hands became stained with my blood.

At the time I was too shocked to comment but later as I reviewed the event in my mind I realized the seriousness.

Dear cepheusjb87,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience and observation in the Emergency Department at Kalgoorlie Hospital, so that we may address it.

The safety of our staff and patients is our highest priority, and we would expect that in the situation that you describe, where exposure to blood or bodily fluids is anticipated, that staff member would wear personal protective equipment (PPE) which includes gloves. Staff are well trained in infection prevention & control and have access to PPE, so it is disappointing to hear that a staff member has assessed the risk of exposure insufficiently.

I will share your story with Dr Jonathan Tembo who is the Head of the Emergency Department and ask that they remind all staff of the standards to meet when exposure to blood or body fluids may occur, and to identify if any further training is required.

I would also like to follow this up with the individual staff member concerned to get an understanding of how we can prevent such an event from reoccurring. I would be grateful if you would consider contacting Mr David Bowdidge, Operations Manager, Kalgoorlie Hospital, on 08 9080 5817 to discuss your presentation to the Emergency Department.

Once again, thank you for your feedback and I hope that you are recovering well.

Kind regards,

Peter Treddinick
