"Pushed out the door as they needed beds"

About: Fiona Stanley Hospital / Breast Service & Ward 6A Fiona Stanley Hospital / Orthopaedics & Ward 4A

(as a service user),

I had surgery on my spine recently in the morning. Was made to leave the ward the next day in the afternoon with a box of Panadol and 10 tramadol. I was lead to believe I should have stayed in the hospital longer. I said I was unable to leave as I live 2.5 hours away but if needed could stay at my child's but still couldn't get a lift till the next day. They were organising me a taxi as they said they had a bed shortage.

I was in pretty bad pain that night, so thankful for the small amount of medication I was given. 23 staples in my neck and I felt no care for my welfare, just needed the bed.

Dear hawkwe76,

Thank you for reaching out to us via Care Opinion.

I’m sorry to hear that you were discharged before you were ready.

I have spoken with the team on Ward 6A, and they have confirmed for me that no patients are discharged without absolute certainty that their clinical recovery will not be jeopardised.

We would love to be able to keep our patients in longer, particularly when there is anxiety associated with discharge, however, there is a huge demand on our beds and as a tertiary hospital, we are only able to admit patients who are extremely unwell.

I wish you well with your ongoing recovery.

Kind regards,

Neil Doverty

Update posted by hawkwe76 (a service user)

I understand your point. I was actually on 4A, not 6A my admission was stated as a multiday stay I feel I was only doing so well as I had adequate care. Once I was home I was in pretty severe pain for a few days. Could they not have transferred me to my regional hospital for aftercare as it was in my understanding, pretty major surgery that I had done being a posterior laminectomy.
