I came into Emergency, severe eye pain (ice syndrome). Was diagnosed with infection that required urgent enucleation. I was in the ED for 10hours. Seen by 5-6 professionals - outstanding care and reassurance.
I was booked in to have a procedure in a few days. I arrived at lvl 1 and was registered. All care was outstanding. I was petrified and saw Social Work who provided excellent reassurance. Nurses doing pre-operative care were lovely (I think her name was Grace).
When I came back from theatres to the ward, I asked for my bag as I noticed 3 staff I believe, talking (just general chit chat) but another came by and I felt curtly told me they would get it when they had time.
Later when this same nurse attended the room I was in and offered another patient pain relief, as I heard them (I couldn't see anything) I asked if I could have some too and they said, oh you want some too? and I said yes please and they replied and said that they are not a mind reader.
At the time I was feeling quite vulnerable and worried to not open the stitched eye (I could feel it pulling on the stitches).
I attempted to eat my evening meal with closed eyes but also tried to manually right eye, the non operated eye. No assistance was offered.
Change of staff asked if I was ok and this nurse got me more pain relief.
The next morning my right eye was gunked up so I couldn't see to eat my breakfast and so didn't eat or drink.
I just wanted a cup of tea as this whole process has been frightening and confronting.
I just wanted to walk out.
The doctor came and noticed gunked up eye and asked nurse to clean it. The nurse (who had been rude to me the day before) came and tried to take the patch off my eye that had surgery and I had to correct them that it was my good, right eye that was gunked up.
Doctor gave me discharge summary, I then left. I wasn't sure what I could and couldn't do eg to lift things.
I went home and took diazepam (a friend's) because I was so stressed.
Tae has been amazing throughout this journey and called me at home and saw me when I was an outpatient.
Sarah (social worker) was super lovely and supportive also.
