"Feeling ignored and need help"

About: Kalgoorlie Health Campus / Emergency Department Kalgoorlie Health Campus / Surgical Ward

(as other),

My partner went into surgery at Kalgoorlie hospital recently. No blood clot stockings were given and no blood thinners were injected or provided.

We returned to Kalgoorlie hospital a few days later because my partner's left leg was swollen and feeling a lot of pain. We had an ultrasound and blood test done. They found a clot in the leg.

They gave us a prescription and file of my partner's health background and told us to go to our family g. p. After going to the chemist, the file that we had was someone else's and the pill provided were wrong.

We went back to the hospital and they took the paperwork back and we had to go back to the chemist to give pill back. I feel some of the nurses were rude and very unprofessional.   We felt like we were in butchery that just didn't care for us or any1.

I asked for an extra pillow in emergency department so my partner could elevate their leg, got told its not the staff member's problem and to find someone else. Tried to get into the d. ward to see my partner and I felt nurses/ doctors just ignored me at door and walked passed.

What are we supposed to do when we need treatment? .. We can't just pack up and go to Perth. We need help, please.

Dear empathyme55,

I really appreciate you sharing your feedback about your recent experience at Kalgoorlie Health Campus and thank you for making me aware of the concerning elements of your partner’s treatment and care. I would like to reassure you that I will be communicating your feedback with our team so that we can make improvements to our service.

We know that providing compassionate healthcare is an integral component of person centred care, so I was very disappointed to read that you felt uncared for and ignored. I have organised, in the coming weeks, for our patient experience team to deliver staff training sessions around compassionate care and the impact on patients and their families when this isn’t evident within our service.

In relation to the concerns around some of the clinical components of your care, I have also shared your story with Dr Neill Kling, Kalgoorlie Hospital Director of Medical Services who has confirmed that all patients are to undergo an assessment of the need for interventions such as the use of stockings or medications as you have mentioned. I have also brought to the attention of Sue Jennings-Hingston, Co-ordinator of Nursing, your experience of unprofessional behaviour and being handed the wrong paperwork. Sue will remind the staff on the ward of the standard of care and behaviour that we expect, and that reflect the values of the WA Country Health Service.

It is so important that you feel that you can trust that you will receive high quality healthcare, should you need it, and I would very much appreciate it if you would contact David Bowdidge, Operations Manager at Kalgoorlie Hospital, directly so that he can facilitate a thorough investigation of the issues that you have raised. David can be contacted on 08 9080 5817 or via email at and would welcome hearing from you.

I sincerely apologise for the distress caused and thank you again for taking the time to provide your feedback. I hope your partner is recovering well.

Warm Regards,

Peter Tredinnick

Regional Director

WACHS Goldfields.
