About: Broome Health Campus / High Dependency Unit

(as the patient),

After experiencing a heart event and having been admitted to High Dependency Unit at Broome Hospital, I was unable to obtain a restful sleep in HDU and I had asked for a room and aids to assist in sleeping. Ended up finding a room and bed myself and then told to get out of the bed I fell asleep in by a senior clinician on duty.

I ended up self-discharging and calling 000 to have the ED Doctor open the doors in order for me to go to my home and own bed for sleep.

Worst experience ever, in my opinion, at Broome Regional Hospital.

Dear Remote Patient,

Thank you for raising your concerns with us regarding your recent admission to the High Dependency Unit (HDU), Broome Health Campus.

I am very sorry your experience in the hospital was unacceptable.

I realise that the HDU is quite noisy with the proximity of beds, monitors and nurses station and there is significant lighting required in the unit.

Any patient admitted to the HDU is required to stay in the unit unless re-examined by the doctor and deemed well enough to be admitted to the ward area.

In saying this the clinical staff rostered on were correct in redirecting you back to the HDU and not permitting you to sleep elsewhere in the ward where you could not be monitored appropriately.

I understand you wanted to sleep elsewhere where it was more conducive to sleep, however it was considered inappropriate given your reason for admission.

I do hope that you have recovered well since this episode and wish you a healthy future.
