"Food in hospital"

About: Sutherland Hospital / Diabetes

(as a service user),

Over 10 people I believe in ward. A few diabetic and lactose intolerance. Every meal, I believe diabetics are provided with sugar full orange juice or apple juice and jelly or custard. None of which could be eaten. I believe lactose intolerance person given milk every time so couldn't eat cereal etc.

Dear caringsf35,

Diets in hospital have been designed by Dietitians to meet the needs of a number of patient groups. The diabetic diet aims to optimise blood glucose and lipid levels by providing a set amount of carbohydrate at each meal and snack. The diet is also reduced in saturated fat, added sugar and sodium as compared to a standard diet. This diet allows for one serve of no added sugar juice per day, diet jelly and low fat custard.

The low lactose diet eliminates all foods with more than 2g of lactose per 100g of food, alternately a milk-free diet is also available. Patients on these diets are offered dairy alternatives such as soy beverages.

I sincerely apologise if the patients you represent received food that was not suitable for their diet type. Your feedback has been forwarded to Dietetics and Food Services to ensure strict attention is paid to diet codes in the future.

Thank you for taking the time to share your story.

Best Wishes

Vicki Weeden

General Manager
