"Disrespect for engagement with carers"

About: Graylands Hospital

(as a carer),

My adult child was admitted to Graylands for a two week stint to transition from one medication to another. The new medication can have very serious side affects and requires careful monitoring.

Despite several requests to speak with the doctors, in order to be informed of the medication regime and how to understand the possible side effects, not once did the ward ring me back to arrange a meeting.

I hand delivered a letter addressed to my child's consultant, at the hospital reception, this too received no response.

My child was discharged, back to our care without even a discharge meeting!

I believe Family/Carers remain low on the agenda. It is very, very disheartening but more than that, I believe it shows total disregard for the legislation in place, to improve the lot of families and clinicians, in encouraging better outcomes.

Dear Warrior,

I am very sorry to hear of your experience as a parent of an adult child who received care at Graylands Hospital. I apologise that you did not get an opportunity to have a meeting with your child’s treating team so that you could have an understanding of the medication regime and treatment plan.

I agree that it is important and crucial for clinicians to include carers in the treatment planning and discharge planning process as this provides for the best outcome for our patients. Dr Heble, A/Director Clinical Services will be available to meet with you to discuss your concerns and will also be able to respond to any other queries that you may have. You can contact Dr Heble at 08 61596775 and can also facilitate a meeting with you and the treating doctor.

Once again, I am sorry for the experience you had. I wish your child and you our very best.

Sincerely,

Karen Kyriakou

A/Executive Director
