I work in Allied Health in a public hospital. So, I'm very familiar with SCGH from a staff point of view. Over the weekend I was surfing and hit my head. Later that morning I had vision loss in one eye which resolved pretty quickly, so I didn't think I needed a medical review. A couple days later the vision loss returned, so I went to my GP who sent me to ED. I was reluctant to go as I understand how incredibly busy ED is and how under the pump the staff are. On arriving I was seen basically immediately by the nurse practitioner Nurina, via the fairly new Fast Track section of ED.
Following assessment she referred me to ophthalmology. I was seen a few day's later in the Eye Clinic. I had an incredibly thorough assessment from the nurses/optometrist/senior reg, and a clear explanation of the reasons for symptoms and next step.
I was quite amazed the initial assessment, referral, and follow-up appointment was so quick and efficient. It's quite weird to experience a hospital from a patient perspective.
Based on my experience it definitely exceeded expectations and makes me quite proud to work for North Metro. Thanks to the ED staff and the Eye Clinic staff.
