"Treated like a farm animal"

About: Box Hill Hospital / Ward 8.1 - Renal medicine & Acute dialysis chairs & Endocrinology & Vascular surgery

(as a service user),

Here we go again...  back at Box Hill hospital and, in my opinion, the treatment, communication and overall patient care is deplorable.

Transferred from rehab to here to have my amputation wound reassessed as it is not healing.  Was advised recently one afternoon that I would be coming to Box Hill. Got there in the evening. Admission completed late that evening.

I have no idea what’s happening. A wheelchair for me is not coming until the next day. I understand the ones here are “not suitable”, despite me using them on previous occasions in recent weeks.

No idea when I am going to dialysis, which is due to take 5 hours. Meant to be having angiogram of leg. Again, no idea when that will happen if at all ... can’t even go to the toilet.

It feels like I’m a lost cause and they just throw me down the end of the ward and ignore me. I feel like a prisoner. I believe it’s not humane keeping people in the dark, no communication, no organisation, no coordination.

I’m not blaming nurses & Doctors... I see it as a failure of management in not knowing what’s important to patient care.

Whenever I get admitted here, I cringe at the thought because I believe my welfare goes backwards.

Dear wearingpr86

Thank you for taking the time to share these comments regarding your current experience whilst admitted to one of the wards at Eastern Health’s Box Hill Hospital.

I’m very sorry you are not aware of the plan of care when you wrote this post. I hope there has been some further discussion with the team caring for you since then. If not, could I suggest asking to speak with the Registrar of the medical unit caring for you as well as the Nurse in charge?

I trust with this suggestion you will have the chance to get greater clarity on the plan for your care, including when it is anticipated things will occur by.

Kind regards,

David

Thanks David,

I did get to speak to a registrar and things were sorted.

My issue is more with hospital management and administration that no doubt come up with protocols, policies and procedures that are, I feel, completely out of touch with traditional patient care that the Drs & Nurses are more in tune with. The type of activities they seem to do on the ward looks more, in my opinion, relevant to achieving “goals” related to the management of patients as numbers on a spreadsheet for reporting purposes.

As a business analyst myself, I can see so many improvement opportunities in this facility that would not only achieve the outcomes management want but also deliver the patient care that I believe seems to be lacking these days. (In my opinion, I’d start in the kitchen 😳)
