"Discharge"

About: Geraldton Hospital

(as a service user),

I felt I was not consulted at any stage of my parent's stay, only on the day it was to happen and was told that they would be transferred by ambulance. Was later told by the social worker that my parent's bed would not be available the following day at the residence then the social worker reinforced their statement to me, and, I felt, spoke over the top of me.

I felt I was unheard, they made me feel inadequate as they also told me that they had discussed it with the medical team late one week and that it was planned for early the next week with no apparent mention of it to me. The hospital staff also failed to tell me that I was not to take my parent to their residential care early as it was their breakfast and they would be very busy.

So in short, I felt there was no communication from anyone at the Geraldton hospital relating to the discharge or time I should have picked up and taken my parent to their destination.

Dear greenyq35

I was concerned to read of the difficulties you experienced with the move for your parent to residential care. Moving to residential care is a big step for any family and it is important that carers and next of kin are supported to be involved to ensure they can best support their loved ones. I am sorry that you felt unheard and inadequate and what would have been a stressful time.

Your feedback has been provided to our staff and I would like to assure you that it is being acted upon to improve communication between carers, the hospital and aged care providers. By working together we can make this an easier transition for consumers and their families. I would appreciate the opportunity to discuss your experience further with you, and if you would like to do this I can be contacted on phone on 9956 2368 or email derek.fraser@health.wa.gov.au. Your call would be very welcome and appreciated.

Feedback like yours is valued by Geraldton Hospital and I thank you for taking the time to share your experience. I hope your parent is now doing well at residential care.

Kind Regards,

Derek

Operations Manager, Geraldton Hospital
