"Inadequate accessibility - no TV subtitles"

About: Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital

(as a relative),

My parent has been admitted to Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital twice in the past 12 months with significant neurological issues.  Unfortunately, this has resulted in delirium in an otherwise very well adult in their early 70s.

They have a severe hearing impairment.  As they recovered from their delirium, I believe re-orientation via the use of a TV to re-establish their usual routine would have been of benefit, however I was disappointed to find that despite hearing impairment being such a common condition, there was no capacity to access appropriate subtitled services.

Dear junegz86,

Thank you for your feedback on your recent experience and your great idea for subtitles on TV for patients recovering from delirium with hearing impairment.

As you may know, televisions are available in most of our inpatient areas. There is the option to have subtitles on request – staff can contact the external provider to arrange for this. Only some television programs and channels have this option, but it seems that would have been helpful for your parent.

We will provide education to our staff and include an item on this on both the staff Intranet site and also in our regular staff bulletin so that staff are aware that this is an option. We will also look at whether we can add it to information for patients and families so that it can be requested.

Again thank you for taking time to give your feedback and I hope your parent is recovering well.

Kind Regards

Janet Zagari
