My parent presented to SCGH emergency department on three occasions in the past 12 months, two resulting in admission to other services, and one under the emergency department service.
Each time my parent has received good care, and with most staff taking the time to address their accessibility requirements (profoundly hearing impaired, reliant on hearing aids and lip reading but with new onset visual impairment).
Despite initial presentation at the end of night shift, my parent received timely assessment and intervention when first presenting in mid-2020. I was delighted to see compassionate and patient-centred care delivered despite the other stressors staff may have been experiencing.
On subsequent presentations, despite significant staffing stressors evident to me, my parent has received good care on each occasion.
Also want to compliment the staff on acknowledgement of the need for family support - in my relative's case due to communication barriers due to pre-existing hearing impairment and in the setting of acute neurological decline. Whilst I believe this should always be standard in the ideal world, I acknowledge with the staffing and workloads I have witnessed, it can be challenging. I am deeply appreciative of the ED staff's commitment to providing this important aspect of care, and feel that management should be aware and supportive of measures that allow this to occur when appropriate.
