"A very happy mumma"

About: Wonthaggi Hospital / Maternity Services

(as a service user),

After 3 episodes of reduced movement at full term and being told by another health service that they could not fit us in for an induction earlier than a week away, my partner and I contacted BCH for a second opinion and hopefully an induction. I was sure something wasn't right and our son was not safe.

I explained my situation with Lauren the acting NUM of the maternity ward who immediately organised an appointment with Dr Sarah for the next morning. After seeing Dr Sarah and explaining our concerns and the response from the other service she agreed that its best we induce asap and booked us in the next evening. I felt such a wave of relief.

From the moment I approached BCH I felt listened to and understood. They supported us in our concerns and addressed them.

I was induced and our beautiful boy was born. The Anaesthetist Kate (I think was her name) was incredible and her epidural provided me with the most comfortable birth experience ever. I felt the obstetrician Merin and the midwife Lauren were the most awesome team. After our son was born I had a small hemorrhage which Merin managed so calmly and professionally that I wasn't even worried. Upon seeing him we all noticed a very large "true knot" in his umbilical cord. He also had the cord around his neck, and my placenta was 'gritty'. I can't explain how it felt to see the evidence of what I knew towards the end of the pregnancy all along, something wasn't right. Our son was thankfully not affected by the knot but it could have been a tragic outcome had I not contacted BCH and listened to my gut instinct. Before we left the next morning (I insisted on getting home) Merin came around to check our son and visit us twice (once just for chit chat). The service we received was absolutely fantastic.

To Lauren, Sarah and Merin, I can't thank you enough for your support,  kindness, and professionalism. You make me proud of our hospital and I believe our community is so very lucky to have health care workers like you.

Dear Anony-moose,

Reading your post gave me such a chill.....this is such a great example of teamwork, with you leading our team, and our team listening! Good on you for following your instinct and thank you for trusting us to make sure we looked after you and your babe.

There is nothing more important to BCH than safety, and I am so super proud that we have a brilliant team of Obstetricians, GP's and Midwives who all want the same thing - a safe and positive birthing experience! Coincidentally, I am writing my response to you on the International Day of the Midwife, a day where, across the world, we recognise midwives and acknowledge the real difference they make. You have just described so perfectly how the right Midwives can make such a positive difference, and I know they will all be really proud as they read this. Thank you for taking the time to thank them, and we all wish you and your new family health and happiness.

Kindest regards,

Jan
