"Forced to take more endone than I wanted to - got sick as a result"

About: Sydney / Sydney Eye Hospital / 2 West & Hand Clinic

(as the patient),

I had surgery on my hand. Afterwards my nurse asked me how much endone I wanted - 1 or 2 tablets. I said I didn’t know as I’d never had it. They told me to take two and then went to get it.

While they were gone, my partner and two other patients in my room informed me that since I hadn’t tried it before I should only take 1 tablet at first.

When the nurse returned, they were with a senior nurse. I told them I was only comfortable taking 1 tablet. They insisted that I had to take 2 as it would be, I believe, too much paperwork to change the dose. I still said no and so did my partner. The senior nurse said I didn’t have a choice and that they knew best. I said no again. They, I felt, shoved it in front of me and again said I didn’t have a choice.

I took both tablets but didn’t take the additional 2 panadol tablets.

I was then very nauseous and couldn’t eat or drink for hours. My next nurse then told me it was unusual to give 2 tablets to someone who had never had it before. I believe the other patient in the room said they also saw them force me to take it.

I think this is terrible service in an otherwise good experience.

Dear Coerced medication,

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback about your experience during your care in 2 West. I was very disappointed to read of the incident you described. Please accept my apologies and you can be assured your feedback has been shared with the staff in the ward and will be discussed at their regular staff meetings in order to improve patient collaboration and standard of care.

In order for us to look more thoroughly into your care, I would encourage you to contact me on SESLHD-SSEHExecutiveServices@health.nsw.gov.au. This would also allow us the opportunity to conduct an investigation into your specific case and give you more personalised feedback.

We are committed to providing care of the highest quality to all our patients, and feedback from our patients/families, provides opportunities to identify areas that may need improvement.

All the best in your continuing recovery

Kind regards

Jon
